OWL CITY:
“FIREFLIES”
Okay, let’s talk about this thing, because as I said on Idolator, atrocities shouldn’t be ignored. They should undergo severe analysis so that this process never repeats and we never find ourselves again so entangled in the guts of the shame machine.
The introduction would be a convincing Postal Service pastiche if not for those melody-quoting chimes that indicate this song will be among those to have a “Christmas mix” and none shall survive the coming horror.
Then the voice enters and the beat makes its awkward first steps and, well, hey, as many have said before, this guy is going for a Ben Gibbard-but-more-rooted-in-modern-emo-okay-he-kind-of-sounds-like-clean-metalcore-vocals thing, so then I start to think that this is a dark mirror on purpose, and it is reflecting all the boring tones of Give Up so we may come together and recognize that that record is the unchewed center of the yawning world.
Then there are some lyrics that make so little sense they sort of undo the whole English language:
You would not believe your eyes
If ten million fireflies lit up the world as I fell asleep
‘Cause they’d fill the open air
And leave teardrops everywhere
You’d think me rude but I’d just stand and stareI have no idea how he has gone from falling asleep to standing and staring at these fireflies born from his act of sleeping, I have no idea why these fireflies urinate tears, but my mind swells at the implications. I am not prepared for their weight.
The chorus is a stupid, catchy thing and I believe that moments before I die I will feel the memory of it throbbing in my head and I will involuntarily sing it as the last bits of my functioning brain cough and shrivel and I am shot into the black hole with little knowledge of what is on the other side. Owl City will kill us all.
